Friends of the Library

In 1992 a group of Orange residents saw the need for volunteers to support the public library. With the guidance of the Library Director, they formulated a plan, drew up a charter and by-laws, registered with the Secretary of State, and the Friends of the Library was founded. The purpose of the organization, as stated in their charter, is to support the town library with programs and activities that enrich the normal library services.

Ongoing Programs

arrowLucy Scillia Scholarship - The Friends have instituted a college scholarship in memory of longtime library supporter Lucy Scillia. Click here for information and an application form, or pick up a copy at the library.

Museum Passes - The Friends provide a number of free passes to area museums, art galleries and other attractions. Click here for more information.

Books for Babies - The Friends provide each new baby to an Orange family a packet containing the first library card, a board book for the baby, and booklets for the new parents, encouraging the family to make the library part of their regular activity.

Homebound Program - A member of the Friends acts as a liaison between the Library and any homebound Orange resident, delivering books, tapes, and videos from the Library and thereby keeping that person in touch with one of our services.

Children and Adult Programs - Throughout the year, the Friends sponsor a number of programs for adults, families, and children. These have included musicals, travelogues, storytellers, theatrical productions, book discussions, and historical programs. All programs are free and open to the public.

Holiday Festival - Each year the Friends invite civic organizations, social groups, and local businesses to share in decorating the Library for the holiday season in November and December. From 30 to 40 groups have participated each year and most of them are regular contributors.

The Great! Book Sale - the Friends' principal fundraising event. All our merchandise: books, tapes, records, CDs, videos, etc. are donated. We sell them at very reasonable prices. The money is used to purchase "extras" for the Library. In the past we have purchased, among other things, a TV, a VCR, materials for the Children's library, computer materials, a bike rack and many programs.

We accept donations for the Great! Book Sale throughout the year. Donations can be left at the Library.

Membership: We welcome new members at any time. Membership forms are available at the main circulation desk. Annual dues are $5.00 for a single membership and $10.00 for a family.
