THE CASE MEMORIAL LIBRARY'S ONLINE CATALOG
Search Options on the Catalog
Home Page (to get there, visit the library home page at http://www.casememoriallibrary.org
and click "Search Our Catalog")
Title search: This is the search option that is active when you first
view the home page. Type the title of the item you are looking for, or the beginning of the title. Results will appear in
alphabetical order ("System Sorted"), but you can change the order by using the
dropdown menu where the words "System Sorted" appear.
Keyword search: Select KEYWORD from the "Search type" dropdown menu. Type whatever you know about the
book: title, author, and/or subjects. Then press Enter or click Submit. The
system searches for items that contain any of the words you typed. Results will
appear sorted by date. If you get too many results with a keyword search, try a
different search option to perform a more specific search.
Author search: Select
AUTHOR from the "Search type" dropdown menu and type the author's name. (Tip: Put the last name first, for
example: "Shakespeare, William" or "Shakespeare William," or just the last name
if the first is unavailable. If you forget to put the last name first, don't
worry — the system will suggest it to you.) Results will appear in alphabetical
order ("System Sorted"), but you can change the order by using the dropdown
menu.
Subject search: Select
SUBJECT from the "Search type" dropdown menu and type a word or phrase that
describes what the item is about. (Tip:
If your subject doesn't appear in the list of results, try clicking "Search as
Words.") Results will appear in alphabetical order ("System Sorted"), but you
can change the order by using the dropdown menu.
Call number search (for nonfiction): If you know the call
number of the item you want, select DEWEY CALL # from the "Search type"
dropdown menu and type the number. This way, you can also see other items that
would be nearby on the shelf (i.e., materials on related subjects).
ISBN/ISSN search: If
you know the standard number of the item you want (ISBN for books, ISSN for
magazines), select ISBN from the "Search type" dropdown menu and type the
number.
Advanced Keyword Search
Click "Advanced Search" to perform
an advanced keyword search. From
this screen, you can combine different kinds of search queries, and limit your
search by material type, location, language, publication date, and/or
publisher.
When you use the catalog in the
library, your search is limited by default to the collection at the Case
Memorial Library. You can use the dropdown menu where the word "
Where do I find the material?
If you
are searching by title, author, or subject, the list of search results will
accordingly be a list of titles, authors, or subjects. Click anywhere in the
list to see the associated items in the collection you are searching. Searching by keyword takes
you directly to a list of items. For each item
in the catalog, the display includes the following information:
When an item is checked out, its
due date is displayed. When there are
holds on an item, this information is also displayed.
Saving Search Results
You can save an item you want to
view later by clicking the "Save Record"
button. You can view the list of saved items at any time during your session by
clicking "View Saved Records" at the top of the screen. You can save
your list to a disk or email it by clicking "Export Saved", and you can request all the items in your list by
clicking "Request Saved" (see
"Placing Requests" below.)
Placing Requests
You can use the OPAC to place holds
on checked-out items if your account is in good standing, with no materials
overdue or fines outstanding. Click the "Request/Hold"
button on the right side when viewing a list of search results, at the top of
the screen when viewing an individual item record. You will be prompted to log
in by typing your name and library card barcode, unless you have already logged
in. You will be asked to choose a pickup location, and to specify a date next to the words "Cancel if not filled
by." If you know you will no longer want the item after a certain date, please
specify the date by using the pulldown menus.
(However, if you prefer not to set a cancellation date, you can skip this
step.) Next, click "Submit." If the
items are checked out, a hold will be placed. You can also use the "Request" feature from outside the
library to request items that are on the shelf. Library staff will call you
with further information in response to your request.
Renewing Borrowed Items
You can use the OPAC to renew
borrowed items if your account is in good standing, with no materials overdue
or fines outstanding, and the items are not on hold for other patrons. On the
catalog home page, click "My Account."
You will be prompted to log in, if you are not already logged in. You then see
a screen where a message stating the number of items you have out is displayed
in the upper left. Click this message to see a list of the items. The ones that
can be renewed have a check box on the left. You can renew them all by clicking
the "Renew All" button, or click the
check boxes for selected items and click the "Renew Checked Items" button. (If your account is not in good
standing, you will now see a message stating that you cannot renew items, with
an explanation.)
